Soulphiction - What What EP - 18437 Records
As it turns out, this release from the great Philpot label co-founder Michel Baumann, aka Soulphiction and Jackmate, will be his last. The esteemed producer can be found in just about any discerning house head's racks, but in late May he sadly passed away. This is his second release on the 18437 label and once again it offers brilliantly inventive deep house sounds that brim with character, funk and soul. The grooves dance with a life of their own on 'What What??!' while a squelchy bassline and neat guitar riff add further detail. 'Midi Funk' layers up tumbling bass, live sounding drums and a jumble of toms and congas into something that is boogie-fide and party ready. RIP.
