Detroit veteran Brian 'Javonntte' Garrett makes a big mark on The Jazz Diaries with yet another superb EP. He's been doing his do since the 90s, having first started playing piano aged just 15 and later touring with Aretha Franklin. That means his music always comes with proper chords and rich melodies as well as timeless house beats that are as interesting as they are irresistible. 'Get Down' here is a real cracker with funky bass riffs and chunky kicks next to soulful vocal swirls, while 'Outerbound' is pure jazz-funk goodness with noodling keys and chords and a beatdown groove to die for.
